Dyslexia has been present since long but has got the necessary attention in the last few years. Although it is something that is not clearly understood by all, there are many signs that people have now began to recognize. Many people and especially children suffer a lot if the problem is not clearly understood. People having such problems in their family or neighborhood can better deal with it by understanding the signs and symptoms of dyslexia.
Dyslexia is a problem where people find difficulty in reading and writing and spellings, which has a neurological origin. It is primarily a learning difficulty that affects skills required for learning, reading and writing.
Signs of dyslexia
•Delayed speech development, difficulty in learning language as compared to other children of the same age.
•In early ages, children might show difficulty in learning and remembering rhymes and poems, following the order of alphabets and numbers and may exhibit difficulty in the learning process.
•School children may show difficulty with spellings, remembering common words and letters or their combinations, reading skills appear underdeveloped as compared to other classmates.
•Children may get confused with numbers or alphabets that appear as reverse of others and may have difficulty in recognizing the correct ones. For example, b and d, p and q etc. This can lead to difficulty in reading letters, words and also confuses their mind while writing.
•They may have confusion of left and right directions, may have difficulty in co-ordination, in arranging books or playing games that require sequencing.
•The general IQ may be average, but the child may show poor academic performance.
•A general sense of frustration may arise due to inability to read and write as per the overall expected school curriculum in spite of making repeated attempts.
•Children may begin to realize the errors and try to avoid studies or activities involving read, writing and language skills. They may start developing a sense of inferiority and may even try to remain isolated in order to avoid other children.
It is important to deal with these children carefully and with patience. When these signs are recognized, they need to be evaluated from a specialist and the appropriate action can be taken. Supporting the schooling with special education, regular rehabilitation therapies and family support can help children overcome this show some improvement in performance.
